Hey Folks! Yes, I live in Texas. It’s been a crazy week and it’s not slowing down; especially with me getting out of dodge for the next couple of days. Therefore, it looks like I’m only going to have one post this week. Shucks! Just when I was on a roll. Here’s a sneak peak on what has kept me busy over the past couple of days. “Sons of the Sun, Inc. presents The Shape Up” It’s for a great cause! If you know a fatherless, teen (14-18) boy, then check out this link: The Shape Up.
Every now and then I am blessed to fall upon a site that adds value to my life. Clients From Hell is a site where industry professionals post their experiences. The site is full of laughs and design professionals can definitely relate.
I was blessed to grow up with a father who loved music. Sundays was his day to play DJ in the house. One of the artists he kept in constant rotation is B.B. King. As Dad would let the music play, I would admire the cover art. The photography and colors were, and still is, top knotch. You can feel the vibes of the music through the art work. Let the good times roll!
Can’t make the event? View the list of winners and read their bios HERE. (Insert big sigh… I’m not going to talk about how the list lacks a certain range of color.)
I’ve always liked Todd Harris Oldman’s illustrations. They remind me of those awkward years in elementary school when boys had coodies, girls were mean, and there was one kid who would try to hide the fact he ate his boogers. Oh, the golden days.
Yesterday, July 18th, marked the first official Nelson Mandela Day. Here are just a few of my favorite quotes. Oh yeah, check out the DOPE text treatment in the graphic. (Click on the image to view the site.)
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. ”
“I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself. “
I guess everyone is trying to capitalize on the green movement; including watch companies. Check out this watch from Wood Shock. It mimicks the style of the classic G Shock watch, however, the face is made out of wood. One of these custom, laser crafted bezel for watches will set you back about $250. I’m also diggin’ the box it comes. You know me… packaging is everything!
It looks like the Girl Scouts of America’s logo got a face lift and a new hairstyle. The original logo (on the left) was designed by the great Saul Bass in 1978. The design firm, Original Champions of Design, was awarded the task of redesigning the logo. The changes have garnered mixed reviews so I’ll let you decide. Which one do you like better?
Agency: Original Champions of Design
Designers: Jasper Goodall and Joe Finocchiaro
Unless you’ve been living under a rock or taken a break from stalking people on their social media sites, then you probably haven’t seen the new Old Spice “Smell Like a Man, Man” marketing campaign. Apparently Old Spice has dedicated a lot of money to their new branding campaign and you know what.. It’s working.
I have to admit when I first saw the commercial I was like, “Eh, okay.” However, the guys in the office think they’re hilarious. What I appreciate is the genius approach to utilizing social media. If you send a tweet to their Twitter account @oldspice you might just get a video response via YouTube within a couple of hours. <-- Which is just bananas to me! No, seriously. Do they have the actor (Isaiah Mustafa) in the studio all day waiting to respond to people?
And then there’s the Old Spice Voice Mail . A free, customized voice mail service. Just upload your phone number, pick a message and you can have the Old Spice man leaving an outrageous voice mail for your callers.
The marketing campaign is a great example of how meaningful creativity and strategic execution can revitalize any brand; even brands once viewed as something for your daddy’s generation. Alright Old Spice, you have my attention.
This song came across my playlist yesterday and it’s truly one of my all-time favorite songs and videos. View the video below and then ask yourself: Which side of the table have you been on or currently on now?
